Introduction This webquest is intended to help you explore the concept of reappropriation through the context of art. The term reappropriation has a number of definitions, but in this instance, the artists whose work you will explore have caused a redefinition of the term. In this context, we can use the term to refer to objects that were cast off after fulfilling a specific functional purpose, and then were reclaimed by individuals who used them to create beautiful, meaningful works of art. If you roll your mouse over the graphics above, you will notice that the picture of the art work changes to reveal a picture of a similar object prior to its reappropriation. This reappropriation of the objects causes us to question the items' value and reconsider their function in society. In other words, does simply changing an object's function allow it more significant cultural value? Your task is to explore the art of four artists who use reappropriated objects to make their art. Simply click on the numbered menues in the navigation area to the left, and you will be taken in to each artist's page. Each page contains activities and instructions for tasks you are to complete. In each instance, you may be asked a set of questions, asked to visit different web sites, or asked to create a work of art. Navigable links are shown in red; simply click on them to travel to outside web sites. Have fun on your expedition! |
