All About Me Tech Talk

Lexi R.

The Prophetstown Elementary fifth graders did a project called All About Me.  We brought in pictures and put them on the computer. Then we wrote about what the pictures were about. We put the pictures on a slide and made a slideshow. The program that we used was Kid Pix. Kid Pix is a program that you can draw, type, make backgrounds, color, etc. on. One thing that I liked about the project is that we get to put sounds on our pages and we even got to record our own voice on some of the slides. While doing this project, I learned all the things that you can do on Kid Pix. I really liked learning about how to put your voice into the project. I also learned how to scan pictures and how to put the pictures on paper on the computer.

All About Me Tech Talk

By Madison P.

The 5th graders at PES used Kid Pix to do our “All About Me” project.  First, we scanned all the pictures we brought in about our family, when we were a baby, our favorite thing to do, and a vacation we have taken.  Next, we wrote four sentences about each picture. Then, we put in the picture that we wrote about.  Following that, we put in a background and any other design we wanted.  Next, we put together our slideshow.  After that, we chose the transitions and sound effects to go with each page.  Finally, we showed our slideshows to the class.  My favorite part about this project was putting in sound effects and watching other people’s projects.  I learned a lot throughout this project. I learned that you could do slideshows in Kid Pix and that you could put your own sound in Kid Pix.  One more thing that I learned was that after you write something, you can have the computer read it back to you.  I really had fun doing this project!

Internet Safety Brochure Tech Talk

Madison  5-C

The PES fifth grade made an Internet Safety Brochure.  First, we made an outline in Inspiration.  Next, we used the Landmark Citation Machine to show where we got our information from.  Then, we transferred all our information to a Publisher brochure.  After that, we found at least four pictures from Microsoft Clipart or Inspiration to put in our brochures. Finally, we printed our brochures and folded them.  During this project, I learned how to make a title and then make subtitles off of the main title in Inspiration.  I also learned how to use the Landmark Citation Machine.  My favorite part about this project was finding the pictures and figuring out where would be the best place to put them.

I liked the idea about this project because it was involved with technology.

Digital Camera Tech Talk

McKenzie  5K

The 5th grade at PES just finished an ABC slide show. The ABC slide show is a project in which each 5th grade student is assigned to 1 or 2 letters of the alphabet. Once they know what their letter or letters are, they have to think of a word that starts with that letter, but it has to be school related. Next you have to take a picture of that thing or person and save it on the computer. The main program that we used was Microsoft Office PowerPoint. In this project I learned how to get pictures off the camera and onto the computer. I liked this project because I learned something new and that’s always good. I also liked this project because I thought it was fun to take pictures.

Monster Tech Talk

Kallie

The fourth graders from Prophetstown Elementary School are working on a special project.  They are working on a Monster Exchange Project.  The students are drawing monsters on the program, Kid Pix.  The kids used the program Word to type the steps they went through to draw their monsters.  Mrs. Megli gave the kids someone else’s steps so they could draw that monster.  Those monster steps came from the kid’s classmates.  The students helped their partner change their words to make the monster easier to draw.  All of the kids’ monsters will be online at http://www.plt3.org/pes/projects.html.  All of the students in our class will get a partner from Syracuse, New York.  They will get to try and draw their partner’s monster. The partner will get to try and draw their monster as well.  From doing the project, I learned how to work with a partner better.  I liked drawing and designing my monster.

The fourth graders at PES are making monsters on the computers.

The first thing you do is draw your monster on Kid Pix.  Next go to Word and write out the steps you used to draw your monster.  Then you will get someone else’s steps so we could draw their monster.  Next we helped our partner change his or her words to make it easier to draw. Our monsters will be on this website http://www.plt3.org/pes/projects.html .  Then we will draw the monsters from the students of New Port Richey, Florida and they will draw ours.  I learned how to find the mistakes of the writing, I also learned a lot about the 2009 Monster Exchange.  What I liked about this project was helping out our partners with their writing mistakes, and that it was very exciting.

Simple Machines Tech Talk

Aaron 4W

The 4th grade at Prophetstown Elementary has been learning about simple machines.  We used our computers and our textbooks to look at simple machines.  Our teacher brought in simple machines like the maul and the pry bar. We learned about simple machines and how they work at http://www.edheads.org/ and in our classroom.  At the website, there were lots of rooms. You had to solve each room by clicking on an object and define what kind of simple machine it is.   For example, at the bedroom you had to describe what a fan blade was. The six simple machines are a lever, inclined plane, wedge, wheel - axle, pulley, and the screw.  I liked looking at all the simple machines and going to the website to learn and find out about simple machines.  My favorite simple machine is the lever.

The 4th grade classes at PES have been learning about the different kinds of Simple Machines.  We used our computers and our Science books to learn. We went to http://www.edheads.org/. At the site we would click on Simple Machines and go to a specific room and play interactive games. In the games, we try to answer questions about an item and try to figure out what type of Simple Machine it is. For example, a knife is a Wedge or the wheels on a car are a Wheel and Axle. At the beginning of the week, we took a pre-test, then we would go the website or we would read about Simple Machines in Science, and then took the real test on Friday.  We learned about the lever, the pulley, the wedge, the inclined plane, the gear, the wheel and axle, and the screw.  My favorite thing about the project was that we got to use computers.

Sea Turtle Tech Talk

Tori 5C

The Fifth grade just recently finished a computer project about Sea Turtles.  For the Sea Turtle project, we had to use books, the Internet, Kid Pix, Excel, the scanner, and PowerPoint. In Excel, we made a chart of each Sea Turtle and made a graph. In PowerPoint we made a slide show.  Each fifth grader had a partner. One person drew a picture on paper and the other one made a picture in Kid Pix. The fifth graders made a slide show using PowerPoint. I learned that there are seven different kinds of Sea Turtles. My favorite part about doing the Sea Turtle project was using PowerPoint and doing all the research.

Iditarod Tech Talk

Hannah 4S

The 4th and 5th grader at Prophetstown Elementary School have been learning about the Iditarod which is a sled dog race in Alaska.  Some programs we used are Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel. We used a lot of Internet sites for this project.  We made a weather chart. We had to track the weather in Prophetstown and in Alaska. We also made Musher Sheets that we had to track what checkpoint they were at, what time they got there, how many dogs they have, and what time they left. We also made a PowerPoint about the race and about our musher. I learned many things about the Iditarod. One thing is that the race is 1,049 miles long. Another thing I learned was that Joe Redington, Sr. is the oldest musher that’s ever been in the Iditarod. Also I learned while doing this project is that the mushers that are not in the “Top 30” get $1,049.  I really liked this project! The thing I liked the most about this project is following my musher, William Pinkham.

Saturn Brochure Tech Talk

Jackson A.  – 5C

The 5th grade students of PES did a project on the Solar System.  First they drew planets (and the Sun) out of a hat to see which planet they would have.  After they drew the planets and the Sun, they had to make a model of their planet and somehow attach an information plaque to it.  Everyone pretty much just hung it to the bottom of the planet by a string or wire.  Then, after everyone was done with their planets, the students designed a brochure about the planet. To make a brochure, they didn’t use Microsoft PowerPoint but they used Publisher.  Like usual, they made an outline in Inspiration and put down information about their planet.  They also used the internet to find information and pictures of their planet.  I used to think that my planet, Saturn, was made of rock, but now from doing this project I know that it is made up of gas and other chemicals.  What I liked about doing this project was that we got to watch a lot of videos on our planet in Science Class and our teacher showed us some information about our planet that we used in our brochure.  I also liked it because I got one the coolest planets out there, Saturn.

The 5th grade classes have been learning about the solar system. We are making a brochure. We have been using Inspiration 6 to write down information about our planets. We used Microsoft Publisher to help make our brochures. We also used a bunch of different sites for information about our planet. In this project, I liked making the brochure because you can put lots of pictures on it and it seems like an actual brochure. I liked designing the brochure the most. I learned new facts about my planet, Mercury, during this project.

2010 Book Project Tech Talk

Isreal 5C

The 5th grade classes made a book project about a book we have read. We used many internet sites to do this project. Some sites are about our book or the author of our book. We had to tell the problem, the main characters, the settings, and other things. We had to make our own webpage about our book.  We had to write summaries about our book and we had to have a picture of the author. I didn’t know how to make a webpage and neither did anyone else so now we learned how to make them. My favorite part about this project was making the webpage.   I liked putting the pictures on it too.

Delaware Tech Talk

Jena 4S

In 4th grade, students chose a state to learn about.  My state is Delaware and I used books and Internet sites to research my state.  I also typed to my friends that live in Delaware, and asked them some questions.  For this project, we had to type a report, say a speech, do a Power Point project, and another art project (such as a state float, state in a box, poster, etc.).  I learned that every Halloween people in Delaware catapult pumpkins across the state. I also learned that Delaware had the first John Deere Tractor.  My favorite part about this project was making my state float.  I put a Lego catapult with a Play-Doh pumpkin glued to a plastic spoon.  I really enjoyed this project and I hope you enjoyed hearing about it.
